Taylor Townsend was born on April 16, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents, both African American, were avid tennis players who introduced her to the sport at a young age. Townsend’s father, Gary, was a professional tennis player who competed on the ATP Tour, while her mother, Sheila, was a college tennis player.
Townsend began playing tennis at the age of three and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. She won her first tournament at the age of six and went on to win numerous junior tournaments throughout her childhood. In 2012, she became the youngest American to win a junior Grand Slam title when she won the Australian Open girls’ singles title at the age of 15.
